"In the beginning, Prajapati [the creator] existed alone.... He desired an offering made in himself.... [H]e obtained [an] offering [and].... His own greatness said to him, ‘Offer it.’ Prajapati realized that his own [sva] greatness had spoken [aha] to him. And so he said, ‘Svaha’ as he offered it. Therefore one says ‘Svaha’ as an offering is made."
- from a Hindu creation myth in the Brahmanas (Hindu Scripture)

Arun Luthra's quartet Svaha was formed as a vehicle for his unique voice as a composer and improviser and as an expression of music as a spiritual as well as an artistic pursuit. Through its repertoire Svaha also pays tribute to Luthra's favourite jazz composers and instrumentalists, among them Eddie Harris, Cannonball Adderley, Mike Stern, and Michael Brecker. Its various incarnations in live performances worldwide in New York, Boston, San Diego, Mumbai (Bombay), London, Paris, and Brussels have included some of the world's finest musicians, including Cecil Bridgewater, Alex Norris and Ron Horton on trumpet, Andy McKee and Lonnie Plaxico on bass, and Otis Brown III and Roland Schneider on drums. Svaha's latest c.d. "Tangibility" is available from this website.
